Mr. Porky

This year's probably the worst year for me when it comes to shedding weight.
My weight has see-sawed like crazy this year.
And because of poor eating habits, and a bad exercise regimen,
I've ballooned to add 20 more pounds.

Crazy all these treadmilling and spinning isn't helping at all.
After looking at my pics of our recent Christmas party,
I will get out of the fantasy that I will still get my old college days physique.
Today, I officially recognizing myself as a member of the fatso club.

God! I'm beginning to dread what I'm becoming- I'm beginning to look like my father.
Nooooooo!!!

Nyeta! Kailangan kong pumayat.

What's the matter? Play ball!

I noticed a lot of players are still not playing because of "injuries"
Mike Dunleavy hasn't played a single game.
Ricky Davis is still out becuase of knee tendinitis.
Kaman should be called Mr. Fragile for being injured year after year.
Starbury still has his reasons.
So what gives?

Maybe NBA should bring the egos back.
Bring Sprewell back.

SLR! SLR! SLR!

Today I got myself a Canon SLR.
Just would like to try my hand at photography.
Here are some of the pics I took.

Tomorrow I'm going to shoot at Subic!

Celebrity Sightings

Look what I found. Some of my old pics with celebs.
Some of the perks of my job. you get to hobnob with them.

Robin is super-fun to work with. Talk about discipline. This guy always arrives one hour before call time and has memorized his lines.
He never fails to give input on line delivery.
You can't help but notice his trademark action star stance, even if the situation doesn't call for it.
This guy is super humble and is very easy to work with.

I've worked with Kris Aquino for Purefoods.
Kris is super machika and friendly. All those rumors that
she's a snob are pure lies. Although she has a few quirks,
that's just probably her style.

Ruffa Mae is such a darling and a pro.
She is as wacky on cam as she is off-cam.
I think she is probably the most fun person I've met.
And energy level is that of hyper kid.

to be continued...

The reason why I'm never going vegetarian

And I thought meatballs were evil. Enter the more evil.... SOYMEAT!
Dressed to impress and served like meat so won't feel the guilt.
In reality you're biting in chewy morsels of paper-tasting goop.
Vegemeat is crap, I can't comprehend why people like this. But honestly my pooch won't even touch this. I'd rather eat ampalaya or brussel sprouts. Or better gimme a hefty plate of greens. Just don't make me feel like a fool. Vegemeat is so pretentious, it's like the evil incarnate. Hahahah And to think this was served by the great Gloriamaris Restaurant for a wedding reception. This was weird to the palate no wonder my freind Regi stopped being vegetarian and chose to get stuffed with meat. Please don't get me wrong, I know I'm acting like a spoiled brat here, but this simply tastes awful....

i love takoyaki!

i suddenly got a craving for takoyaki balls.
these are seafood balls they cook over hot metal plates.
they put in fish powder and a sweet n sour dip.

i've had boring ones in manila but the best of the lot
i tried in hongkong! these one are found in causeway bay near this big shopping mall whose name i can't recall. But these balls are big and delicious. And they're expensive (50HK$ for 10 pcs) but really, really good!

note: the name of the place is gindaco

Fitness First Sucks

i'm ranting since last night.
Let me repeat this.
Fitness First sucks!

And if you plan to go to gym never, ever go to Fitness First.
You pay almost $50 a month and what do you get?
Crap! Utter crap! I go to their SM mall of Asia gym. That gym has barely opened for a year but most of the showers have broke down. Shower heads are missing. Machines have conked out.
I have experienced my stuff getting stolen at the locker rooms. And the restrooms are vandalized to extinction.

But what makes me further puke about them is their billing system.
I've heard horror stories of Fitness First's notorious billing system; like still being charged for monthly dues on your credit card even if you've already canceled your membership, etc.
Never occurred to me how frigging greedy they are but here's what happened.

I plan to go to another gym so I canceled my membership.
Girl at the counter tells me that I need to notify them one month in advance for that to be done. So if I cancel now, it would take effect January 1, 2009. Meaning you have to pay another month's due, a big waste of money since you're already transfering to another gym. Mind you, I have already paid them one month in advance. So in effect you're already wasting 2 months worth of monthly dues. To avoid hassle, I just settled, only to be told that there will be another rate increase for the months of november and december that is added to my bill! Grr....
and to add further insult to injury, girl at the counter even gave me a referral slip to refer my friends to fitness first. I should've torn that paper in front of her face.

This gym is f-ing greedy they should change their name to Money First.

More US Visa tips

here's the continuation of my article yesterday.

so after paying for the application fee, booking your interview online comes the hard part- the interview. before going there, remember to double check your stuff. you may need to bring a certificate of employment your income tax form, bank statements, credit card statements plus all the supporting documents you need. Honestly the most important part is your ties to your country. a letter from your company may help.

here are more tips for that us visa:
1) be organized. the last thing the consul wants is you rummaging through tons of papers while she asks for documents. organize. organize. organize. it makes both you and that consul's life easier.
2) don't forget the important stuff. passport, 2x 2 photo, a pen, your application form. your papers. some common sense is a prerequisite
3) be there early. you're required to be 1 hour earlier than your interview time. there's also a queue of people.
4) dress appropriately. you want to be taken seriously? dress the part, but don't overdress. this is not a wedding, you're not going to the mall either.
5) bring extra money. when your visa gets approved, your visa and your passport will be mailed to your address, pay a delivery charge of Php 250 and more for provincial areas.
6) handle yourself well. this is probably the most important part when it comes to that interview. answer your questions carefully. don't buckle. answer the question clearly. don't be too restless and don't give preposterous answers.

good luck on that visa

hurray for obama!

after much hullabaloo i finally got my US visa!

It took me more than 5 years and restless nights to get this.

so you wanna go to the US eh?
here are my two-cents worth in making your us visa application successful:

1) go to evisa.state.gov.us this is where you download the application form.
be ready with information about yourself, your work, relatives in the states, etc.
2) pay the fee. its $131 US convert it to peso with the rate of 49.50 its about Php 6550 pesos. You pay the amount at any bdo branch.
3) after payment is completed, they will give you a supplemental form. fill up the necessary info. (Note: Under LIST COUNTRIES THAT ISSUED YOU A PASSPORT don't forget to put in Philippines. ) Remember to mark n/a in any question where info is not applicable.
4) book your interview. Go online and register. This is the faster way. You'd be asked to fill up information about you. You'd be charged $10 so be ready with your VISA or Mastercard.
There's a tricky part with the US Visa site. This site is not too compatible with Mozilla Firefox, I suggest you use the tricky old Internet Explorer. After registering and paying, and not scheduling your interview yet, you'd be stuck in net limbo, meaning you don't know what to do and you'd be back in the screen that asks you if what type of VISA are you applying. Don't worry and answer it again it will lead you the scedule an interview page. I suggest you schedule an early morning one (usual times are 6:30 am, 7:00 am and 7:30 am) Prioritize the first 2 timeslots.
5) Read everything carefully. One big mistake of most people is not reading what needs to be done. Remember to establish your ties with the Philippines or else they won't grant you a VISA.
The best way is to get a letter from your company signifying you have filed a vacation leave (VL) and they are approving of your stay in the US.

i would like to have my chickenjoy and eat it, too

me: "Miss One order of 2-pc. Chickenjoy, pls."
girl from jo-bee: "Sir we only have wings."
me: "nope i don't want a wing part."
girl from jo-bee: "we only have wings."
me: "i want a thigh part."

why can't have the part i want?

don't you hate this scenario when you dine at jollibee?

when you order chicken and they only have the wing part.
and they force you to order that.

it's like life... you're forced to take crap that people try to unload.
life is about choices. what you choose will affect your future.
so why stick with choices you don't want, there's always mcdonalds!

some of the life lessons when choosing a piece of fried chicken

quantum of solid

watched the new james bond movie quantum of solace.
and i'm beginning to dislike bond.
this movie is proof.

james bond used to every guy's fantasy. smooth, suave, gets the chicks, has hot gadgets, drives the hottest girls. this movie makes this fantasy go kaput.

in an effort to make bond at par with the times, this new bond is rough, unneccesarily violent, and bland. in other words they made him a jason bourne wannabe.

the movie continues where casino royale has left off. Bond has captured Mr. white. A car chase ensues in the streets of venice and his alfa romeo is destroyed. please take that this is the only scene where james drives in cool car, after that he's driving daddy-type suv's. ho-hum.
then comes the interogation where they get double crossed by a double agent (wow two doubles in one sentence) the bodyguard of m, where white discloses about his secret organization called quantum. then bond chases the fiend on the streets of venice, where he kills him in a very delicate stunt involving revolving levers. after that its all downhill...

the story is as bland as judge reinhold's careeer. the villain is a nerdy geek called dominic greene
whose organization is a cover for quantum, who claims to gain from world's resources. For this movie, they want to own the water supply and cause a drought in Bolivia.

dominic greene is the lamest bond villain ever! he gets my vote for getting the most boring henchman. and he is not even intidimidating. hey writers, what were you thinking?

strawberry field's character is too underdeveloped. I feel like she's unnneccessary to the film.
what i like about this movie is that they made global issues real. Like the dollar losing its value, countries fighting over drilling, britain getting helpless in the race for oil sources in other parts of the world.

i just want the old bond back.

notes on a scandal

the news about it was everywhere so we had to see it.
it was a badly shot video featuring passe bold star criselda volks.

looks-wise criselda wasn't that pretty. but she had thick lips and long smooth legs that went like forever. there's too much buzz about this, given her penchant for going to casinos and losing bigtime. i had to see this!

glad my officemate jhett had a copy. there were a total of 4 vids. poorly shot .3gp of an ugly guy giving her head. and worse she took it fudge style. there wasn't much to be seen. there wasn't any remorse on her face. she looks like she enjoyed it. worse she looked spiked.

i think the vids are still on the net for download. not recommending it though. a lot of girls are wild enough to go "paris" these days. sheesh!

off to highlands for All Saint's Day

all saints' day meant a whole day sweaty affair at the cemetery for our family.
this year, there's a major change.
after lunch, we proceeded to tagaytay highlands for the weekend.

my uncle was able to rent a log cabin that accommodated 5 families.
and it was great. and this was an understatement. the house was HUUUGGGE!

the rooms were as big as living rooms. the master bedroom even had its own spa.
in other words it was luxury all the way. the price tag- a hefty 1,000 US dollars per night! Ouch!

yep it was great family bonding all the way. i enjoyed the cool tagaytay weather.
the night was cold, but we felt warm and fuzzy inside. Everybody had fun, until I had to spoil their bliss with my snoring. hahaha! sorry but i haven't been sleeping much all week.

I had to wake up 5 am to go to the cemetery early. the past few days were i was on overtime.
i had fun with my cousins. Thanks to my uncles. Pics to be posted soon.

fantasy woozy

lost big time on my first week.
got burned by bad field goal percentages.
aww shooting shucks...

chris duhon averages only 20 something percent, which means he isn't adjusting yet to d'anotnis run and gun offense
luke ridnour averaged the same before getting injured
miami rookie chalmers shot worse less than 20%
jason terry shot 11.5% today.

what's happening?
get your acts together! I'm losing bigtime here.

worth a look:

ramon sessions a mean 6 cat stat machine, good fg % too
louis williams, just scores like willie green, inconsistent stats

i'm watching out for:
deron williams hope he gets back from injury
my fantasy nba lineup needs a boost

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

fantasy 2008- 2009 nba bin selections that's worth a second look

1) wilson chandler sg
this guy deserves a spot in mike d'antoni's rotation. Have you seen his stats in preseason?

2) russell westbrook pg/sg
he is rookie but look at who he's up against- its erratic earl watson!
i think given more minutes, this guy's got promise.

3) brook lopez f/c
brook finds himself as the new starting center of the nets because boone is out with heart problems and swift is... well he is undependable as ever

4) spencer hawes c
brad miller's out for 5 games, making spencer a viable option with the kings with a very thin lineup. this team should bring back latrell sprewell or something, they sure need a boost.

5) etan thomas f/c
haywood's out. etan's was a double double machine for a time last year. now he can make it year long with haywood for a while, that is he stays healthy. expect your fg percentage to drop though.

the season starts tomorrow, the 29th. good luck

Mr. Dunkin

i've noticed that the new thematic campaign of Mr. Donuts is hinging on and is very darn close to dunkin donuts "pasalubong ng bayan" heritage. Mr. donuts now has the mag-uwi ng saya (bring home the happiness) tagline in their tvc campaign running for this quarter.

well dunkin's not doing anything. I guess they're kinda happy with their recent ad featuring a spoiled brat who won't share her doughnuts. This ad teaches the wrong values to children teaching them its ok to be bratty and not to share.

i'm sad to say this, but when it comes to brand directions, dunkin is still running around like a headless chicken. the brand should be clear whether what directions they're going to take. Unlike their competition, the brand needs a boost, a positive one.

Reboot, please.

rock on jb

tonight's the concert for jb at mag:net high street.
last i heard he has already snapped out of his coma and has been released from the hospital.
Now therapy begins.

Hope he gets well soon.

so far a lot of support and prayers have poured in.
thanks to all who loves the man.

tonight we're gonna rock for you.

this is a clip from the actual concert.

how to make people hate you in Fantasy NBA

hoard all the centers.
since most of them have double positions (F/C)

the upside: higher field goal percentage, great trade offers
the downside: let's face it most centers are poor free throw shooters
plus people will not invite you to the league next season.

but its a great strategy.
some jerks in one of my leagues have done this strategy.
hope it works, you greedy scrooges!

I hate Math therefore i'm a copywriter

The first time I saw this ad,
I said, "Wow, they made the client spend so much on a gatefold ad with just a mathematical equation." Now the buzz has spread to become shouts from really mad parents becasue of an advertising blunder.

Yes, I'm talking about the full page enfapro kid ad that came in the Phil. Daily Inquirer last Monday. That's Oct. 19, 2008.

The headline has the equation 9 +5 =14 with a gatefold flap covering 14.
When you open the flap there's another hidden equation 9 + 5 x 2 - (7×2) = 14.

Look, I may not be a genius. But there's a rule in math you do multiplication and division first (MDAS)

So when you solve the equation you get:

9 + 5 x 2 - 14 = 14

9 + 10 -14 =14

19- 14 =5! not 14

Now they came out with another ad to do damage control.
With a kid pretending to "solve" the equation and getting the right answer (5)

Haha! Great work! You just wasted 800,000 of the client's money.
And earned the backlash of hundreds of parents.
Not only is this getting the rounds in parent's blogs. They might switch to another brand.

Go ahead and blame the poor writer. Enfakid has been pushing "Genius" equation ads for years.
now they got a pr nightmare. Sheesh

This is the reason I became a copywriter. I didn't excel in math.

rock for JB

Jonathan Bangoy or JB is a senior copywriter at J Romero.
I've worked with him a few months there and I've seen his rise from an eager OJT to one of the most successful copywriters in the country. Unlike J. Romero alumni, he was a rising star and had achieved what we at that agency can only dream of - stardom. He was the Philippines official delegate for the Young Lions at Cannes, France this year. He even graced the cover of Adobo Magazien with his art director partner - Gigay.

Last September 29, he had a seizure and fell into a coma.
He is a father of 2, one a newborn.
He had been on respirator for 17 days and had already maxed out his health insurance.

His friends at the Advertising world are organizing a rock concert to raise funds for his family.
Titled Paper Scissors, Rock. The concert will feature different bands from advertising agencies pledging their support. Sandwich, one of the premier rock bands in the country is scheduled to perform. Moonstar88 and Imago is also performing.

The concert will be on October 28, 2008 at Mag:net High Street for 350 pesos.
Proceeds will go to JB's family.

We're all praying for his fast recovery. Last we heard he's already awake from his coma and was already starting to talk.

for tickets you can call Herbert Hernandez at 0920 9328675 or shu manalo 09175220501

how to get ideas

writer's block?
can't think of something?
get a grip, man.

here's the basics of of jim aitchison's cutting-edge advertising.
a surefire guide for the young and upcoming creative or the jaded and overfatigued writer alike.
whether you're doing a rush tvc, or even a breakneck print scam here's what the doctor ordered,

a) is there an idea in the name?
b) is there an idea in the packaging?
c) is there an idea in the logo?
d) how about where it will run?
e) what happens without the product?
f) what happens with the product?
g) how about with and without the product at the same time?

hope this helps.

its fantasy nba season!

if there's something i look forward to every october
its the start of the nba season and the fantasy nba.

to those who haven't played this, you'll never think stats are this fun.
how do u play it?

you join a league and play either head-to-head or rotisserie.
i prefer head-to-head.

Here's how you play it
you and others play "managers" of your own team.
of course, the bad boy attitude, the goodtime girls and the locker room antics doesn't come with the team. but they affect your team in a way.

You get a point guard, guard, shooting guard, small forward, forward, power forward, two centers and at least 2 utilities. Realtime stats of your players are compiled everyday based on actual NBA stats and you win by average at the end of the week. (Mondays in Manila)

You do your draft like the regular NBA season, you choose players from different teams.
Of course, you get the good ones and the unsung heroes. Of course, it doesn't stop there
because players might get injured, suspended, etc. which may affect your league.

I have played this game since 2003 and I haven't won yet.
Maybe I should start drafting Kobe Bryant.

Oh well, let the games begin.

crying over spilled melamine

some people will do anything for a profit.
and the recent melamine scare is solid proof.

i am really angry and disappointed why on earth
the people who added melamine is still out there.

they should be hanged. they don't have a conscience.
think about all those children who were victims of this mess.

I heard the CEO of Yili has already resigned. It's not enough, dude.
So many sick children have gone undocumented. These are the people
without a voice, and you poison their food.

God have mercy on your souls if you have one.

its the end of the world as we know it

First it was the oh-my-gas.
Then the milk contamination scare.
Then came the shocking Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.
Then the AIG stinker.
Then the economy's gone kaput.
Now global meltdown ensues.

Are we literally consuming the world? Or is it coming back to haunt us?

Let's face it. Money makes this world go round.
When the rich catch a cold. The people down below get stricken worse.
So the rich are trading down their hefty Ferraris,
the extravagant homes and the lavish lifestyle.
Time to tighten your Hermes leather belts.
Feel our pain. hahahaha

I never expected it to be this way.
I'm expecting either a hailstorm from heaven or a rain of fire.
but payback came dramatically from behind.

All this greed, all this avarice.
You deserve it.
It's poetic justice.

hey blockhead

haven't been writing much lately
actually been out much
not much dinners. yet i feel i'm feeling bloated.
and i'm running out of juice to write.
damn this writer's block.

nothing much has happened to my life.
i'm trying to be happy but deep inside i'm depressed as hell.
i turned another year older and i haven't achieved my plans for the year.
i'm deepshit scared of my future
is this frigging midlife crisis in advanced mode
i'm not even near my 40s yet.

i love my job but i'd welcome an agency change if it happens.
maybe a change of scenery would do wonders.

hey mr. destiny, i'm not giving giving up yet
so better spring a good one for me.

on my sidelines even if it's a holiday.

Nice Rack's

I've had the pleasure of doing the launch ads of Rack's almost 2 years ago. Rack's was a famous grill place a few years ago but they closed down and the people behind Shakey's bought the franchise and now it's back!

I was surprised the campaign still being used. The warpaint idea was inspired by the local barbecue stalls we used to frequent. The one doing the barbecue had charcoal marks on their faces after doing endless barbecues for the whole day. We just translated it to having a big appetite and that's it!

This one's a wraparound at SM Mall of Asia.

Fine Print: East West Bank

This campaign jumpstarted my career at J Romero.
I had a lot of firsts with this ad.
It was my first win after I transfered from a small agency called Expert Advertising.
It was the first time I partnered with Lucas, a partnership that would last 4 years.

East West Bank's Home Loans took off bigtime after this campaign.
And we did a lot of good stuff together.

We were lucky that the client, Ms. Yoly C. was ahead of her time and she understood the merits of creativity in bank ads.

What I don't like about this ad though is the lengthy copy that client requested. If I had to do it over again I would've shortened it further. I'm proud to say that this was the fruit of the class I took with Claire Drueco-Lopez,
the former ECD of JWT.

Look at Me 4: Blind Man's Bluff

This is one TVC I'm really proud of.
Pro bono stuff for the 2006 Philippine elections.
The objective of the ad is to increase Vigilance during the election ballot counting.
We came up with the idea of people playing Pitik Bulag, a local version of Blind Man's Bluff.

The brief was only for a 15s but when the material came out it was overwhelming that we stretched it to 30s.

Look at me 3: Our Last Hope

Hope's TVC campaign for 2006.
This was the last tvc to be produced because of the cigarette ad law.
This consisted of a 60-minuter and two 30's material.
Shot this in Subic. Flew in foreign talents. Used a helicopter.
Used a panzer tank. Used a stealth bomber. Brought Godzilla.
Used dozens and dozens of sports cars. Hope you like it.

By the way, I posted this for viewing purposes only.

Shakeys 2006 Thematic campaign

This consisted of 3 30's materials

We introduced the "Its gotta be Shakeys" tagline.

I also wrote the jingle.

Had fun shooting this.

We were fortunate to work with Mark Meily of the blockbuster movie "Crying Ladies."

Food and jokes overflowed.

I did the jingle. In fact it was the first song I ever wrote.

I must have done something right because Fortune has established itself as
a mainstream brand and kept growing since.

In fact, I was elated to discover the power of song when I was commuting one day.
People inside the jeepney were singing along and humming to the jingle when it played on the radio.

I was totally floored. I wanted to blurt out "I wrote that! I wrote that!" But they might stone me. So I just grinned.

Oops they can't upload mp3's in this spot. I'll just send the file if you request it.

Fine Print number 4: Singapore Sling

Some classic stuff from my J Romero days. I remember having to clear with Batey and Singapore clients just to get your idea across. It was like trying to pass through the eye of a needle.
Pain - I love it!

Look At Me: Talk 'N Text LIHI TVC

Talk 'N Text has always shown the lighter side of life with their commercials.

For this spot, the focus is on a pregnant woman and her out-of-this-world requests of having her husband buy her fruits that are either not in season or simply impossible to find.

This commercial got rave reviews from Ms. Nanette Diyco of Businessworld, a respected figure in the advertising community. Yay! Go team!

Fine Print Number 3: The Mystery of the unfolding Winston

Winston was stumped. After years of using its trademark red packaging, it is now shifting to blue and red. The brief was to make a campaign exciting enough to announce the packaging change. The problem: The proliferation of fakes in the provinces have made its loyal customers quite unreceptive to change. The second problem was the self-imposed ad ban on radio and tv by Japan Tobacco which made the announcement hard. Read: They might think the new look is not the same Winston they loved. Our solution: Be a mythbuster. Blow up the old, herald the new.

This consisted of inciting curiosity by coming up with teasers prior to launch.
Not only was there buzz about the product, results were phenomenal and people totally
embraced the new look. And we lived happily ever after.

Fine Print no. 1 - Roarin' in Style

Did this a few years ago at J Romero.

It's an omnibus ad for Jaguar, the pimped up ride of the shagadelic workaholic.

This is in line with the "Gorgeous" campaign of Jaguar's global agency Euro RSCG.
We're lucky we had freedom to glam it up a bit!
This ad features all the topscale models from the X type to the XJ!
Make mine a Jag, baby! Meowr!
